At Collective Position we are big believers in women. Today we want to share some words of wisdom from our female clients who, in their various roles, have cracked that glass ceiling and made it to the top. We also have three personal stories from #TeamCP paying homage to those who have gone before and continue to inspire us. Enjoy! and Happy International Women’s Day.
"My Nonna Flavia" - Angela Scicluna
My grandmother Flavia Gringeri was and always will be a constant source of inspiration for me. After having lived through WWII and seen the destruction and chaos caused by such a horrific event, my grandmother fell in love with my grandfather and they decided to leave everything they knew to start a new life , post-war in Australia.
As was common in the era, my grandfather left for Australia first and while building a life for the two of them here, married my grandmother by proxy while she remained at home in Sicilia. Once everything was ready for my grandmother’s arrival, she left her family, her friends, her home with no idea when she would be able to return and see them again for the chance to have a better life in a land she had only heard of and had never seen. This bravery and determination surprises me and never ceases to amaze me – anyone who has lived away from home or spent a significant amount of time away from loved ones knows how hard it can be.
Despite the language barrier and the prejudice many Europeans encountered when first arriving in Australia, my grandmother was determined to make a life she was proud of – and that started with their home. Like many Italian women my grandmother was a fantastic seamstress and an amazing cook but more importantly she was kind, smart, incredibly courageous and has made me incredibly proud to be her only granddaughter.
